After a year as Manchester United’s first choice striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has hinted he could be set for a new role at the club.
The Swedish striker has been out of action since April after suffering a serious knee injury in the club’s Europa League game against Anderlecht. After initially being let go at the end of his contract, United re-signed the striker, despite having already splashed out £75m on Romelu Lukaku and giving away his number nine shirt.
He decided to take on the vacant number 10 shirt following Wayne Rooney’s departure, and has suggested he could be ready to play in a role befitting the number on his back.
Speaking in a video for Volvo, Ibrahimovic said:
“To me, number 10 is the star.
“The one who makes the difference, gets noticed, wins the matches and is the leader.
“And I see myself in that position but it is not something that is given to you, it is just something you are, that’s just the way it is.
“To be honest, it is like a trigger for me coming back from that injury. Because I wore the number 10 on the Swedish national team and PSG.
“I would have worn it at Inter but I soon moved to Barcelona. I wanted it in Milan but took another number out of respect. In Ajax I didn’t have it.
“I feel like a ten and I stand for number 10. It will go down in history that I always had number 10.”
Rumours today are that Ibrahimovic could be set for a shock involvement in Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle, with a potential position on the bench.
