Yaya Toure, at his peak, was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, if not the world. But even the best have their equals, and Toure has declared that Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is the toughest opponent he has faced in the Premier League.
While Matic is of course now a rival across the City of Manchester at old foes United, the majority of the duo’s battles have come when the Serbian was plying his trade at Chelsea.
Despite the two being different in style, the sheer size and physicality of the pair make them a match for anyone – including each other.
Speaking to reporters about his future, as well as his past, Toure described Matic as the ‘toughest opponent’ he has played against in the Premier League, but also admitted he has enjoyed his battles with his midfield adversary:
“Toughest opponent? Matic. I hate him, this b*****d!” said Toure.
“He’s such a difficult player to play against. Tall and strong as well. It’s been fun to play against him, even though it’s difficult. He’s powerful, he’s tall.
“To be able to find an opponent to play against me and stop me… there’s few of them, but Matic was one of the close ones who was able to give me problems.
“He can run. He can fall back. He can track. He can fight. He’s a good, good player.”
While Matic is still an integral part of Manchester United’s midfield Yaya’s career at Manchester City is edging towards its conclusion, with his contract not being renewed at the end of the season.
