Wolves hero Doherty hails ‘special’ win over Newcastle

Wolves’ wing-back Matt Doherty has described his winning goal against Newcastle as ‘pretty special’ after his 93rd minute heroics.

The Black Country outfit took the lead through Diogo Jota after 17 minutes who followed up his midweek goal against Chelsea, by firing past Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.

However, the hosts were back on terms just six minutes later when Ayoze Perez headed home a Salomon Rondon cross.

While there were some controversial decisions that went against Newcastle, Matt Doherty delivered the ultimate sucker punch deep into stoppage time, arriving at the far post to head in the winner in the 93rd minute.

Speaking after the game, the 26-year-old admitted that it was a special moment.

“Scoring with almost the last kick of the game gives them no chance to get back into the game – so it’s pretty special that way,” Doherty told Sky Sports.

“Once the keeper saved Jota’s shot I can’t really miss it – it’s pretty special.”
