Deal Close: West Ham set to sign £40 million striker Maxi Gomez

West Ham are closing in on the £40 million signing of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to reports.

22-year-old Uruguay international Gomez has won rave reviews for his performances in Spain since joining Celta Vigo from Defensor Sporting in the summer of 2017.

Renowned for his aerial ability and clinical finishing, Gomez netted 19 goals in his maiden La Liga campaign, following that up with a further nine strikes this season.

According to Sky Sports, Gomez has a £43.3 million release clause in his Celta contract, although the Hammers are expected to conclude a deal for slightly less than that figure.

Although West Ham are eager to compete the deal before tomorrow’s transfer deadline, it is expected that they will loan the talented attacker back to Celta until the end of the season.

Delaying Gomez’s move to the London Stadium may well have a knock on effect on the future of West Ham’s Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who is reportedly keen on a move to Valencia this month.
