West Ham book medical for defender with transfer hijack near

West Ham have booked a medical for Jean-Clair Todibo as the defender nears a move to the London side from Nice.

Julen Lopetegui’s side have reached a full agreement with the Ligue 1 side for Todibo, who is set to sign for the Hammers on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to make the move permanent for a fee of €40m.

West Ham had looked set to miss out on the 24-year-old as Juventus pushed for a deal, but are close to hijacking the defender’s transfer to Turin.

Juventus remain interested, though Todibo will now undergo a medical with West Ham and has agreed personal terms on a Premier League move.

The France international’s arrival will represent the latest significant coup for the Irons after a productive summer in the transfer window to date.

Todibo will join Guido Rodriguez, Niclas Fullkrug, Max Kilman and Crysencio Summerville as the headline arrivals in the capital and will replace Kurt Zouma, who is closing in on a free transfer to Saudi Pro League side Shabab Al-Ahli.

Todibo had agreed a move to Manchester United earlier this year but the deal was blocked due to multi-club ownership rules.

United and Nice are each owned in part by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos and UEFA have introduced a rule preventing transfers between related clubs competing in the same European competition. Erik ten Hag’s team and Nice will play Europa League football in 2024-25.
