Welcome to Hell! Galatasaray’s best wins against English clubs

Galatasaray host Tottenham Hotspur at RAMS Park this evening and the visitors can expect a red-hot reception in Istanbul.

The Turkish giants are capable of creating a cauldron of atmosphere, with trips to Turkey often accompanied by the soundtrack of ferocious fan noise. Galatasaray’s famous ‘Welcome to Hell’ banner is well remembered and Spurs must deal with the decibels this evening.

Ahead of the clash, we’ve remembered Galatasaray’s best wins against English clubs.

Welcome to Hell! Galatasaray’s best wins against English clubs

Galatasaray 0-0 Manchester United, Galatasaray win on away goals – Champions League (1993)

Manchester United were greeted with a hostile reception in Istanbul in 1993/94. Back in Europe’s top competition for the first time in 24 years, the Premier League champions were favourites for the tie with the Turkish side.

However, a 3-3 draw at Old Trafford left Sir Alex Ferguson’s side facing an uphill task in the return. Greeted at the airport by hundreds of feverous fans unfurling less-than-welcoming banners, the atmosphere was at a fever pitch by kick-off.

A forgettable goalless draw followed but chaos kicked off at the final whistle. Police clattered an angry Eric Cantona, while Bryan Robson was gashed by a riot shield. Off the pitch, hundreds of Manchester United fans had not even made the game as violence erupted on the streets.

For Ferguson, it was the most intimidating atmosphere of his long reign.

Galatasaray 2-0 Leeds United – UEFA Cup semi-final (2000)

Galatasaray took a giant step towards the UEFA Cup final after beating Leeds United 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

Hakan Sukur’s free header opened the scoring for the Turkish side before Carlos Capone turned in a second just before half-time. Leeds were unable to issue a response, leaving David O’Leary’s young team with a huge task in the return. A 2-2 draw at Elland Road sent Galatasaray into the final.

It was another clash marred by events off the pitch, as two Leeds fan tragically lost their lives after being stabbed in Istanbul.

Galatasaray 0-0 Arsenal, Galatasaray won 4-1 on penalties – UEFA Cup final (2000)

Galatasaray took on English opposition again in the final, facing Arsenal in Copenhagen.

Both sides squandered good chances in an entertaining goalless final that was settled via a shootout at the Parken Stadium. Davor Suker and Patrick Vieira missed their penalties for Arsenal, allowing former Tottenham defender Gheorghe Popescu to convert the winning spot-kick.

Galatasaray became the first Turkish team to win a European trophy and completed a historic treble in the process.

Galatasaray 1-0 Manchester United – Champions League (2012)

Galatasaray turned around their Champions League campaign to progress to the knockout rounds in 2006/07.

After failing to win in their opening three games, the Turkish team recorded three consecutive wins to reach the Round of 16.

Burak Yilmaz rose highest to meet a set-piece and earn Gala a 1-0 win in Istanbul, the forward’s fifth goal of the group stage campaign.

Manchester United 2-3 Galatasaray – Champions League (2023)

Galatasaray secured their first win on English soil in 11 attempts after capitalising on some shambolic defending from Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The home side twice led in the contest through Rasmus Hojlund’s brace, though Gala forced a route back into the contest. Wilfried Zaha came back to haunt his former team with a goal before Kerem Akturkoglu levelled.

An awful error from Andre Onana led to Casmeiro’s red card and the conceding of a penalty, though Mauro Icardi missed from the spot. The Argentine atoned for that error when he raced through to score the winner and seal a famous Galatasaray win in England.
