Welbeck set for Chelsea medical as deal agreed

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton with the forward set to sign a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton with the forward set to sign a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Welbeck is due to undergo a medical with Chelsea ahead of completing his transfer to West London, having requested an exit from Brighton amid interest from the Blues.

Chelsea have targeted Welbeck to add experience to their youthful dressing room, with Xabi Alonso identifying the 35-year-old as an ideal solution.

Welbeck has made 400 appearances across his Premier League career and scored a seasonal best of 13 league goals last season. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Brighton accepted Welbeck’s formal request to leave, after six seasons with the Seagulls.

The former England international will provide cover for former Brighton teammate Joao Pedro, as Chelsea reshuffle their forward options.

Welbeck’s arrival is set to lead to exits for Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap, who both have interest from Premier League rivals. Aston Villa have held talks about signing Jackson, while Delap has several suitors, including Everton.
