Van Nistelrooy agrees deal to become new Leicester manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to be named as the new manager of Leicester City, replacing Steve Cooper.

Van Nistelrooy has agreed terms to take charge at the King Power Stadium, following the decision to sack Cooper this week.

Leicester sit 16th in the Premier League table and have won just twice since promotion back into the top flight. The Foxes have now turned to Van Nistelrooy, who had been seeking an opportunity in England after leaving Manchester United.

The 48-year-old returned to Manchester United in the summer as an assistant to Erik ten Hag. He was brought back to work alongside his compatriot at Old Trafford, having previously scored 150 goals in 219 games during his five-season spell with the Red Devils as a player.

Following Ten Hag’s dismissal last month, Van Nistelrooy took charge on an interim basis and led the side to a four-game unbeaten run. His spell as interim manager included wins over Leicester in the Carabao Cup and Premier League.

However, it was decided he would leave his role following the appointment of Ruben Amorim from Sporting Lisbon and his coaching staff.

Leicester are now set to hand Van Nistelrooy the chance to step back into senior management in the Premier League. The Dutchman previously coached PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season and led the Eredivsie outfit to the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield. He left PSV citing a lack of backing from the board near the end of his debut season at the helm.
