Southampton manager Claude Puel says he expects Virgil van Dijk to be a Southampton player next season.
The former Celtic defender is the latest Southampton player to be linked with a big money move away from St Mary’s, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City all having been linked in recent weeks.
However, speaking today, Claude Puel does not expect the defender to be leaving this summer;
“It was a bad injury. But now it’s okay. The surgery is finished, he can work normally, he can start the gym work and rehab to come back for next season….and with us.
He is our captain. He is important for us. He is a fantastic player. We will wait until the beginning of the season to see him again on the pitch. He has a long contract and I think the directors want to keep him”
Whether the Saints can actually keep hold of their Captain is a different matter. They have a recent history of selling off their best players. Liverpool have taken Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne,Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana while Manchester United took Luke Shaw and Morgan Schneiderlin.
The rumours suggest that Chelsea are the favourites to capture van Dijk, who would command a few of around £50million.
