Van Dijk hails Liverpool reaction in comeback win over Luton

Virgil van Dijk hailed the second-half reaction of Liverpool as the Reds came from behind to beat Luton.

Liverpool moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 4-1 win over Rob Edwards’ side, though were forced to fightback from a goal down at half-time after Chiedozie Ogbene’s opener for the visitors.

Van Dijk brought Liverpool level on 56 minutes with a header from Alexis Mac Allister’s corner, before Cody Gakpo struck just two minutes later in a quick-fire one-two.

Further goals from Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott – on his 100th appearance for the Reds – sealed the win and extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the division.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now recovered 22 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, equalling a club record for a single campaign.

“Very happy. I think we had plenty of opportunities in the first half and upfront we didn’t do it, but it has been an eventful game,” Van Dijk said, as per the BBC.

“Obviously I try to be important at set-pieces not only defensively but offensively as well. There was a couple of time I was free but the ball didn’t come, but yes it was a good equaliser.

“Nobody was satisfied with the first half. We were rushing in the final third and we didn’t find the right pass.

“Obviously it is quite normal to become nervous upfront when you are not making the right decisions.

“The reaction shown today was outstanding and something we need for the rest of the season – today was a big one.

“I try to step up from the first second I think it was key to stay calm. Luton are a good side and they play football taking some risks and when we won the ball we had to punish them. Overall it’s a great evening and time to focus on the weekend.”

Liverpool next face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday as the two teams meet at Wembley for the first silverware of the season.
