Van Dijk admits he made a mistake for Man City penalty

Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk admitted that he made a mistake in giving away a late penalty during his sides 0-0 draw against Man City earlier today.

The £75 million defender had been majestic throughout today’s game at Anfield, but he uncharacteristically dived in on Leroy Sane inside the box in the 85th minute and referee Martin Atkinson pointed straight to the spot.

Luckily for Van Dijk, however, Man City attacker Riyad Mahrez blasted the penalty wildly over the bar, and with his blushes spared, the Dutchman admitted that he made a mistake.

“It is not smart to dive in there. It was a penalty and it shouldn’t have happened, but I’m very happy we didn’t concede,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

Holland captain Van Dijk was asked if he had watched Mahrez take the spot kick: “I watched it because I wanted to get the rebound if he missed it.’’ He continued.

“They did well, as did we, up until the penalty moment. We were unlucky not to score, and lucky not to concede as well, so I think we cancelled each other out. It was a tough game against the champions and I’m happy we kept the clean sheet. We wanted to bounce back from our defeat to Napoli and I think we did that.”

Today’s draw now means Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea are joint top of the Premier League on 20 points as we head into the latest international break.
