USA make ambitious bid to appoint ex-Liverpool manager

The United States have made an ambitious approach to appoint Jurgen Klopp as manager of the national side.

Klopp has been identified as the leading target to replace Gregg Berhalter, whose second spell in charge of The Stars and Stripes came to an end following their disappointing Copa America campaign.

The USA became the first-ever host nation to be eliminated in the group stage, following defeats to Panama and Uruguay.

Klopp called time on his nine-year spell at Liverpool at the end of last season, after admitting he was ‘running out of energy’ at Anfield. The German led Liverpool to a wealth of honours during his time in charge, including the 2019 Champions League and a first Premier League title in 30 years a season later.

Klopp’s appointment would be a massive coup for the USA, who will co-host the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico in 2026.

The Independent has revealed that initial contact has been made with the 50-year-old to gauge his interest in the role. International football could provide Klopp with a less-demanding role from the day-to-day tasks of elite club football, though he has stressed that he intends to take a break from football.
