Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of Paul Pogba this morning ahead of the crunch clash against Liverpool.
The Frenchman has been the subject of intense criticism in recent weeks, and has been left out of a number of starting lineups. He has since been restored to the squad and started to put in more improved performances and was highly anticipated to start against United’s most bitter rivals.
However it is being reported that Pogba pulled out of United’s training session on Friday afternoon after suffering a gash to the leg, and is now considered a doubt for the clash between the second and third placed Premier League teams. He is expected to undergo a late fitness test to decide how bad the problem is.
If he can not play, it leaves Jose Mourinho desperately short of options in central midfield and only highlights the need for new signings.
While Mourinho confirmed yesterday that Marouane Fellaini could be back in the team to face Liverpool, the Belgian will be unable to play a significant portion of the game in fear of aggravating the injury which has kept him out of action for five weeks.
United’s only other midfield options are Nemanja Matic, Michael Carrick and Scott McTominay, while Jesse Lingard or Juan Mata could be asked to play in a more withdrawn role.
