Tuchel urges Rashford to remain ‘hungry’ after England goal

Thomas Tuchel has said he wants Marcus Rashford to remain hungry after scoring in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia.

Rashford came off the bench to seal England’s success at Dallas Stadium, as the Three Lions opened the 2026 tournament with three points.

Croatia had twice cancelled out Harry Kane goals before half-time, before Jude Bellingham fired England back in front early in the second period. Rashford’s 85th-minute goal sealed the win and made it four career goals at the World Cup for England, level with Michael Owen and Bobby Charlton.

The 28-year-old has reignited his international career after a loan spell at Barcelona last season, but had scored just once in 15 previous appearances for England.

Having seen Anthony Gordon selected ahead of him against Croatia, Rashford replaced Gordon and made an impact with a well-taken late goal.

The forward’s future remains up in the air as he seeks a permanent exit from Manchester United, though Tuchel has been impressed by Rashford since his arrival in the England camp.

“Harry is in excellent shape. Jude is in excellent shape. Marcus is pushing and pushing and pushing and training on the highest level,” said Tuchel when asked about his goalscorers.

“I’m very happy for [Rashford] that he got this relief and I hope he stays hungry for the next one and the next one because he was absolutely impressive through the last 17 days and really deserved his goal.”
