The Premier League players with the most open-play assists since the start of last season

Alongside scoring them, creating goals is one of the hardest tasks in Premier League football. Removing set-pieces, we’ve looked at the most prolific creators in the division since the start of last season.

The Premier League players with the most open-play assists since the start of last season:

Leandro Trossard – Brighton/Arsenal (11)

Leandro Trossard has proven to be an astute addition for Arsenal, after signing for the Gunners from Brighton during the January transfer window last season.

The Belgian produced 10 assists in just 10 league starts for Arsenal over the second-half of last season, including a first-half assist hat-trick in a win at Fulham. He’s averaged a goal or assist every 94 minutes in the Premier League for Arsenal.

James Maddison – Leicester/Tottenham (11)

The creativity of James Maddison was not enough to keep Leicester in the Premier League last season, but Spurs signed the midfielder in a £40m deal.

Maddison was a revelation during the season’s opening weeks with three goals and five assists in 11 starts for the North Londoners, becoming integral to new manager Ange Postecoglou’s plan before his recent injury absence. The 26-year-old has 11 open-play assists since the start of last season and a further three from dead-ball situations.

Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa (11)

Ollie Wakins has also recorded 11 open-play assists in the Premier League since the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

Watkins has found the best form of his career since Unai Emery’s appointment at Aston Villa, regaining his place in the England squad as a result.

The 27-year-old is one of only three players to have 6+ goals and 6+ assists in Europe’s top 5 leagues so far this season, alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane.

Bukayo Saka – Arsenal (12)

Bukayo Saka continues to get better and better in an Arsenal shirt and will celebrate his 200th appearance for the Gunners this week. Saka has been in superb form for the North Londoners this season and has 17 goal contributions from 18 appearances in the Premier League and Champions League.

Mikel Arteta this week said there are ‘no limits’ on what Saka can achieve. One of the best young talents in world football right now.

Erling Haaland – Manchester City (12)

Erling Haaland might be scoring goals at a record-breaking rate, but just two Premier League players have provided more open-play assists since his Manchester City debut.

Haaland took his total to 12 goals created with a pair of assists in Manchester City’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham last weekend.

Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City (14)

Considering Kevin De Bruyne has barely played any Premier League football this season, his appearance at number two on this list is rather impressive.

De Bruyne led the league for assists last season to win his third Playmaker of the Season title. The champions will hope the Belgian can return fit and firing across the second half of the campaign.

Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (16)

Mohamed Salah leads the rankings with 16 open-play assists since the start of last season. Salah is a numbers machine and has started the new campaign in sparkling form.

The 31-year-old has 16 goals and assists in 14 appearances, with only Kieran Trippier and Pedro Neto having created more goals so far this season.

In 2021/22, Salah joined an exclusive group of players to top the Premier League for goals and assists in the same campaign. Currently second on both metrics, he will be eying a repeat.
