Alexander Isak is in unstoppable form right now. The Swedish striker has continued his hot streak with another goal against Wolves this evening.
Isak’s opener at St James’ Park means that the 25-year-old has now scored in eight consecutive Premier League games for Newcastle, with his form having propelled Eddie Howe’s side back into the mix for Champions League qualification.
His purple patch also means just two players have ever had a longer goalscoring run in the Premier League.
Isak has leapfrogged a whole host of Premier League players who have scored in seven straight games. Some expected names feature, including the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sergio Aguero, Erling Haaland, Ian Wright, Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer. Among those to have also reached seven consecutive games with a goal are Romelu Lukaku, Emmanuel Adebayor, Mark Stein, and Taiwo Awoniyi.
Isak’s eighth in a row has seen him join elite company. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored in eight straight games during a brilliant debut season at Manchester United in 2001/02, while Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge (2013/14) and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (2019/20) have also achieved the feat.
Van Nistelrooy also sits second for longest goalscoring runs in the Premier League. The Dutchman produced a 10-game goalscoring run that spanned over two seasons, ending the 2002/03 campaign with eight in a row before netting in the first two games of the following season.
That record lasted over a decade until Jamie Vardy smashed it during Leicester’s stunning title-winning campaign in 2015/16. Vardy scored in 11 successive matches, with his record-breaker coming against Manchester United at the King Power Stadium. Ironically, Van Nistelrooy is now Vardy’s head coach at Leicester City.
