The longest unbeaten runs in football this century

Bayer Leverkusen are making headlines in the Bundesliga with the newly-crowned German champions looking to complete an entire league season without defeat.

Leverkusen have not only won the first league title in their history with games to spare, but are now just four games from becoming the first team to complete a Bundesliga campaign without defeat.

Xabi Alonso’s side are unbeaten in all competitions this season and have gone 30 games in the Bundesliga without defeat.

Arsenal’s Invincibles also fail to make the cut on this list, with their run ended at 49 games in 2004. Bayern Munich are the highest-placed team from Europe’s top five leagues inside the top 20, at 18th, after a 53 game run without defeat between 2012 and 2014.

Portugal’s Porto, incredibly, feature three times inside the top 20, while Celtic (56 games between 2016 and 2017) just miss out on the top 10.

5. Al-Hilal Omdurman – Sudan, 2016-2018 (60 games)

Sudanese superpower Al-Hilal Omdurman feature twice inside the top 10, after 57-game and 60-game streaks since 2000. The Blue Wave have won a record 29 Sudan Premier League titles, including 13 since 2003 alone.

Al-Hilal Omdurman have twice finished as runners-up in the CAF Champions League, in 1987 and 1992.

4. Levadia – Estonia, 2008-2009 (61 games)

Estonia’s Levadia sit fourth on this list after going 61 games without defeat between 2008 and 2009.

Levadia have never been relegated from Estonia’s top division and have won 10 Meistriliiga titles and a record eight Estonian Cups since being founded in 1998.

After runners-up finishes across the last two seasons, Levadia are hoping to wrestle back the title from record winners and Tallin rivals FC Flora in 2024.

3. Sheriff Tiraspol – Moldova, 2006-2008 (63 games)

Sheriff Tiraspol became a household name in European football during the 2021/22 season after becoming the first Moldovan team to reach the Champions League’s group stage.

The minnows secured an upset win over Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, with Sébastien Thill scoring the winner in the 89th minute.

A seismic shock, no doubt, but not quite the Hollywood underdog tale pictured. The club are based in Tiraspol, the unrecognised breakaway state of Transnistria, that is dependent on the Kremlin for support. With a budget that dwarfs their rivals in Moldovan football, Sheriff have won all but two titles since 2000/01.

2. Al Ahly – Egypt, 2004-2007 (71 games)

Al Ahly are the most successful club in world football with 121 trophies won. The Egyptian outfit have claimed 43 Egyptian Premier League titles, 39 Egyptian Cups and a record 11 CAF Champions League titles.

African football’s elite force rank second for the longest unbeaten run in world football this century after going 71 league games without defeat between 2004 and 2007.

Part of a golden era for the club, their run kickstarted a sequence of eight consecutive league titles.

1. Lincoln Red Imps – Gibraltar, 2009-2014 (88 games)

Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar hold the record for the longest unbeaten league run in football in the 21st century.

Their staggering run without defeat spanned five years and saw the club go 1,959 days from May 2009 to September 2014 without losing a league game.
