The Champions League top scorers in 2023/24 so far

We’ve reached the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League as club football’s biggest and best tournament reaches its conclusion.

The game’s greatest players have starred once again in Europe this season, but who leads the race to end the campaign as the Champions League’s leading scorer?

Here are the Champions League’s top scorers in 2023/24 so far:

5. Vinicius Junior, Galeno, Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez, Rodrygo, Alvaro Morata, Rasmus Hojlund (5 goals)

Seven players are tied in fifth place with five goals, including Real Madrid wingers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.

The former scored both goals in the club’s semi-final first leg against Bayern Munich and has provided more goals and assists in the Champions League’s knockout rounds than any other player since 2021/22.

Manchester City pair Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden also scored five goals each as last season’s champions reached the quarter-finals, while Galeno caught the eye for FC Porto.

The winger, who was handed a Brazil debut against Spain in March, scored five times and provided three assists in eight appearances for the Portuguese side.

=3. Erling Haaland – Manchester City (6 goals)

Erling Haaland finished as the Champions League’s leading scorer in 2020/21 and 2022/23, though fell short in his quest to win the award this time around.

The Norwegian scored six times as Manchester City reached the quarter-finals, including home and away braces against Young Boys in the group stage.

Haaland has now scored 41 goals in just 39 appearances in the Champions League, entering the all-time top 20. He’s now level with Manchester City’s record scorer, Sergio Aguero, for goals in the competition. Alessandro Del Piero (42) and Neymar (43) are next in his sights.

=3. Antoine Griezmann – Atletico Madrid (6 goals)

Antoine Griezmann’s renaissance at Atletico Madrid continues with the Frenchman in the midst of another fine individual season. One of the leading lights in La Liga once again this season, the 33-year-old has 13 goals and six assists for Diego Simeone’s side.

In Europe, he has been similarly effective, scoring six times as Atleti reached the last eight. Only once before, in 2015/16 when he scored seven goals as the Spaniards reached the final, has Griezmann netted more in a Champions League campaign.

=1. Kylian Mbappe – Paris Saint-Germain (8 goals)

Paris Saint-Germain’s exit in the semi-finals means Kylian Mbappe’s time in Paris will end without Champions League success.

It’s not been for the want of trying from the club’s record goalscorer, however, who is the joint-leading scorer in this season’s Champions League so far with eight goals. Mbappe helped PSG navigate the tournament’s Group of Death, before starring with three goals across two legs in the last-16 win over Real Sociedad.

He netted twice more in the quarter-final comeback at Barcelona but was unable to take PSG to the final. Mbappe has now scored 48 Champions League goals, level with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andriy Shevchenko in 10th place overall.

=1. Harry Kane – Bayern Munich (8 goals)

Harry Kane is level with Mbappe as the leading scorer in the Champions League and can add to his haul when Bayern face Real Madrid in their semi-final this evening.

Kane needs one more goal to equal Wayne Rooney’s record as the leading English scorer in Champions League history, while his 11 goal involvements in this season’s competition is also a record for an English player.

The 30-year-old has produced, statistically, the best season of his career this term with 44 goals in all competitions for the German giants. Champions League success would be the ultimate end to a record-breaking individual season for the England captain.
