Ten Hag has sympathy for Rashford amid online abuse

Erik ten Hag has said he has ‘a lot of sympathy’ for Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United forward took to social media to condemn the abuse he has received this season.

Rashford has struggled for form for much of the campaign at Manchester United and has been criticised for failing to replicate last season’s performances.

The 26-year-old scored 30 goals in all competitions in 2022/23, earning the club’s Player of the Year award, but has managed just eight in all competitions to date this season.

Rashford has repeatedly been targeted online and responded to a supportive tweet to condemn the abuse he has received.

In response to an X post by @UtdParadigm, which read ‘The way Marcus Rashford is being treated is absolutely disgusting. It’s cruel. It’s abuse’, the England international agreed and said ‘I appreciate your support! It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough’.

Ten Hag was asked for his view on the posts ahead of facing Burnley this weekend and said the supporters must back Rashford as he looks to rediscover his form.

“I have a lot of sympathy for him. So last season, I think he had the best season he has had in his career, he scored 30 goals, and you see what he is capable of,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“Then this season, he didn’t give the performances, and people are very critical, and I think we have to back him. Everyone should back him and push him to get back to the levels he was last year.”
