Ten Hag discusses Harry Kane qualities as he admits Man Utd ‘have to strengthen the team’

Erik ten Hag has discussed Harry Kane’s qualities and admits Manchester United ‘have to strengthen the team’ this summer.

United have had a positive first season under Ten Hag and are fourth in the Premier League table ahead of Thursday’s trip to face Tottenham.

The Red Devils can consolidate their position in the Champions League places with a win in north London and have reached both domestic cup finals this season, ending a six-year wait for silverware with League Cup success in February.

United have been linked with signing a centre-forward this summer as the club look to take the next step and challenge for the Premier League title and Ten Hag has discussed his desire to improve his side in the transfer window.

“I think we need and we have to strengthen the team. So in more positions too and, for example, for the squad depth. But we don’t think about this at this moment and we don’t think about this,” Ten Hag told his pre-match press conference.

“It’s only about, so far, I think we have are having great season so keep going, keep improving, keep progressing. The team is doing so well and then it is enjoyable to be a part in this team. So we have to keep that process going.

“We have great players, a good team, a great year, but is only a success if you keep going.”

United will face off against one of the Premier League’s leading forwards on Thursday evening, with only Erling Haaland having outscored Harry Kane in the division this season.

Ten Hag was asked what impresses him about the England captain, who has been linked with a summer move to Old Trafford.

“First of all, the number of goals. Also, his key actions to come to goal, key passes as well. He is just a great player and a great personality as well.”

Kane’s future at Spurs is uncertain after another trophyless season in north London and the forward will enter the final 12 months of his deal at the club this summer. Ten Hag refused to comment on the transfer speculation however, when asked if he believed Kane would fit in well at Manchester United.

“I am preparing my team for tomorrow for the game against Spurs. He is one of the players we have to face and I do not think about anything else.

“It is quite clear his impact on the game from Spurs,” he added. “And we have a plan, of course, for that and in the home game we did very well. So, yeah, for tomorrow, we need a very good plan as well.

“You have to defend as a team and he is a clever player so don’t allow him to come in the situations where he can have a big impact on the game.”
