Sunderland will welcome Chelsea to the Stadium of Light on Sunday as they attempt to move away from the bottom of the Premier League standings.
The Black Cats are currently last in the table with only five points and have been struggling badly under Régis Le Bris. They have not won any of their past eight league games since August, collecting just two points from their previous seven matches. After losing 3–1 away to Coventry City and then suffering a 2–0 Europa League defeat at home against Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday, Sunderland have also failed to score in three consecutive matches at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland team news
Le Bris will need to make changes to his defence because centre-back Omar Alderete is suspended for one match after being sent off in Sunderland’s loss to Coventry City last weekend.
The manager has also been dealt another setback, with midfielder Habib Diarra expected to miss about six weeks after picking up a muscle injury in training. He joins defender Dan Ballard, who has a hamstring problem, and winger Romaine Mundle, who is out with a knee/ACL injury.
Nordi Mukiele, however, has passed the concussion protocols and is likely to return directly to the heart of the defence. After making several changes for Thursday’s Europa League match against Dinamo Zagreb, Le Bris is expected to bring back several rested key players, including Enzo Le Fée, Brian Brobbey, Noah Sadiki, and Reinildo.
