Stockport coach set for shock move to European champions

Stockport County coach Andy Mangan is set to join Carlo Ancelotti’s backroom staff at Real Madrid.

Mangan has been head hunted by the reigning Spanish and European champions due to his relationship with Ancelotti’s son, Davide. The 38-year-old did his coaching courses with Davide and has now earned a recommendation to move to Madrid.

It is a huge move for Mangan, who made 425 appearances during a long Football League career that included spells at Wrexham, Accrington Stanley and Fleetwood Town.

The Stockport assistant has only been at Edgeley Park since July but has been credited with helping The Hatters’ brilliant start in League One, where Dave Challinor’s side have taken 10 points from four games since promotion to top the division.

Why do Real Madrid want an English coach?

According to The Athletic, Carlo Ancelotti and son Davide, who has a growing influence at the Santiago Bernabeu, are understood to want an English coach with experience of the Football League.

There is a desire for greater specialism on his coaching staff and Mangan will be brought in due to his youth and similarities in vision with Davide, who is expected to depart to take up his own managerial career in the near future. It is expected that Mangan will move with Davide when the opportunity arises.
