Tottenham have been outbid by Ligue 1 club Lyon for Spanish starlet Papa Cheick Diop.

Spurs made a bid of around £9m for the 20-year-old Celta Vigo midfielder last week, who is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League club.

However, according to the Daily Mail, French club Lyon have joined the race to sign the Spain U19 international, and have lodged a higher bid than that of Tottenham.

Diop was born in Senegal, but moved to Spain at age 14, where he has gone on to represent the Spanish youth teams at international level.

He has a £25m release clause in his contract, which still has four years to run. However both Spurs and Lyon believe they can sign the midfielder for significantly less.

Tottenham are yet to make a signing this summer, despite the Premier League kicking off last weekend. However they are thought to be close to signing Davinson Sanchez from Ajax, and are also interested in Serge Aurier from PSG.
