Spurs players to reimburse fans who attended Newcastle horror show

Tottenham’s players have confirmed that the squad will reimburse the fans who attended the club’s 6-1 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.

Spurs’ hopes of Champions League qualification suffered a humiliating setback at St James’ Park, as top four rivals Newcastle ran riot to secure an emphatic win. The Magpies were rampant across the opening exchanges, racing into a five-goal lead inside 21 minutes.

It was the second-earliest a side has take a 5-0 lead in a Premier League fixture after Manchester City against Watford in September 2019 (18 minutes), and Spurs’ heaviest defeat in the Premier League since a 5-0 loss to Liverpool in December 2013.

Interim manager Cristian Stellini was sacked following the loss and the Spurs squad have now confirmed that all supporters in attendance will be refunded.

“As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger, it wasn’t good enough,” the players said in a post on the club’s Twitter account.

“We know words aren’t enough in a situation like this, but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’s Park.

“We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening, when again your support will mean everything to u.

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”
