Spurs ‘make contact’ with Nagelsmann

Tottenham have made contact with Julian Nagelsmann’s representatives as the club look to begin talks with the German about replacing Antonio Conte.

Nagelsmann has emerged as the leading target for the north Londoners following his shock dismissal at Bayern Munich last week and Spurs have began negotiations to gauge the 35-year-old’s interest in becoming Conte’s successor.

Spurs have a long-standing interest in Nagelsmann and previously sought to appoint him in 2019, following Mauricio Pochettino’s departure. Nagelsmann turned down that approach in favour of remaining with RB Leipzig, before his move to Bayern Munich in 2021.

The Times are reporting that Nagelsmann wants to take his time before deciding on his next move, amid anticipated changes of coach at some of Europe’s top clubs before the summer. Real Madrid is among the roles which could be available this summer.

Spurs have compiled a long list of potential replacements for Conte and Nagelsmann is understood to feature highly. The north Londoners have began the process of finding a new head coach immediately as the club look to avoid a repeat of their managerial search in 2021. Spurs appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as manager just days before pre-season began, having been turned down by a number of preferred options.

Luis Enrique and former manager Mauricio Pochettino are on the club’s current shortlist and each are available for talks over the role. There is also interest in several Premier League coaches, including Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Fulham’s Marco Silva.

Conte’s assistant, Cristian Stellini, has been placed in charge for the remainder of the season as Spurs look to secure Champions League qualification.
