Ossie Ardilles admits it is ‘futile’ for Tottenham to try and keep wantaway star Christian Eriksen at the club.
The 27-year-old has just a year remaining on his contract at Spurs having failed to agree a new deal, with the club facing a dilemma over whether to sell the midfielder this summer or risk losing him for free in 12 months time.
Former Spurs midfielder Ardiles believes selling Eriksen is the club’s best option, rather than keeping an unsettled player and risking disrupting squad harmony.
“It looks to me like he has put his mind on a move – that he wants to go somewhere else,” Ardilles told talkSPORT.
“And if that is the case it’s futile for the club to try and keep a player when he wants to leave.
“I won’t say he’s not happy with us, because he is, but his mind is trying to play somewhere else, and the best thing is to part company.”
Having not signed a player for 18 months, Tottenham finally got their summer recruitment underway with the signings of Leeds United’s teenage winger Jack Clarke and highly-rated Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, with Ardilles saying Pochettino has shown his penchant for signing young talent.
“People were speculating about who Mauricio was going to buy, but no one has the slightest clue except for Mauricio.
“But you can see right now the way he does things; he likes to buy young players and put a lot of his influence on them, and take it from there.
“People like Dele Alli for example.”
