Spurs ‘leading’ but Man United still in the race to sign Raya

Manchester United remain in the race to sign David Raya this summer, though Tottenham are frontrunners to sign the Brentford goalkeeper.

Raya has been linked with several leading clubs after turning down the offer of a new contract at Brentford, with the goalkeeper’s deal set to expire next summer.

Brentford have set an asking price of £40m for the Spain international despite the risk of losing Raya on a free transfer next summer, a figure that Spurs are reluctant to meet.

The north Londoners are keen to secure a new goalkeeper and have made Raya their focus, with reports that the club have agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old ahead of a potential move.

However, the Telegraph are reporting that ‘there is no expectation that a deal will be agreed imminently’. The delay could allow Manchester United back into the race for Raya, with the Red Devils remaining interested in deal.

Erik ten Hag wants to sign a goalkeeper despite the expectation that David de Gea will sign a new deal. The Spaniard has been criticised for his distribution this season and there are ‘no guarantees’ that he will remain first-choice at Manchester United next season.

United are prioritising additions at centre-forward and in midfield, but the club’s interest in Raya has ‘not faded’ with the goalkeeper’s comfortability in possession admired.

Raya also led the Premier League for saves and save percentage in 2022/23, while he ranked in the 93rd percentile or higher among goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues for both touches and crosses stopped per 90 minutes.

Brentford have already secured a replacement for Raya after the Bees completed the signing of Mark Flekken from Freiburg for £11 million.
