Spurs are reportedly in talks with inter Milan over a potential deal for Djed Spence – for just £25 million (€30m) plus bonuses.
Italian media broke the news that the two clubs are in negotiations, with the full-back expected to sign a four-year contract.
Spence is “keen” on a move to the San Siro, according to The Athletic, who reported earlier this summer that Everton were also interested in him.
The move makes sense from an Inter point of view, given they just lost Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid. But less so for Spurs.
Spurs should not sell Djed Spence on the cheap
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi does not see him as a starter, because he sees Pedro Porro as his starter on the right and Destiny Udogie as his man on the left.
That seems totally reasonable, but it feels like a mistake to then throw the baby out with the bathwater by selling Spence. Porro is their only other option on the right, while Udogie is injury prone and and his backup on the left is Andy Robertson, who has entered the winter of his career.
The fact that Spence is able to play on both flanks is valuable in its own right, but he has also grown into a fine player over the past couple of years.
There has been the odd injury issue (he seems to sustain about two a year), some rough patches of form and he was effectively shunned by Antonio Conte in his first season, but he is a workhorse who has been pretty dependable for Spurs during a period of struggle for the team.
Many onlookers scoffed when Thomas Tuchel called the 25-year-old up to his England squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026, but he proved every doubter wrong. By the end of the tournament, he was one of their best performers.
Usually, a strong showing at an international tournament would increase a player’s value, but the opposite appears to have happened here. Spurs were supposedly looking for around £34 million (€40m) earlier this summer, but have brought their asking price down by about £9 million.
They will now receive the kind of fee you might get if there was only a year or two left on his contract, but he still has three more plus the option for another. It’s only slightly more than what they paid Nottingham Forest for him in 2022. Why are they so desperate to get rid of a useful player for a relatively small sum?
Spence is by no means a perfect full-back, but he has been one of the few solid buys they have made over the past few years, when their transfer business has been otherwise mostly terrible.
If they were to try to find a replacement for him with the same money, would anyone be confident in them find someone as good as he is right now? It’s doubtful.
