England’s excellent run at this summers World Cup in Russia will come to an end today when the Three Lions face Belgium in the third place play off.
Although English hearts were broken by their 2-1 semi-final defeat to Croatia, it has still be a superb World Cup for Gareth Southgate’s side, with a squad of young and inexperienced players achieving their Country’s best performance at a major tournament since 1990.
Speaking to the press ahead of today’s fixture Southgate confirmed that his team will be looking to finish their World Cup on a high and also revealed how much he has enjoyed working with his players:
“We got back to St Petersburg at 6.30am on the day after the game, so an emotion fuelled few days. But the players are incredible. They’re a pleasure to work with.
“Their energy this morning and desire to finish the tournament well, we owe it as much to ourselves as to our nation to finish well.
“We’ve set the standard of how we work, the standard of how we play, and we want to maintain those standards right to the end.”
