Gareth Southgate has not yet made a decision on his future as England manager after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain on Sunday night.

La Roja took the lead almost immediately after the halftime break through Nico Williams, but impact substitute Cole Palmer equalised with a fine strike from range in the 71st minute.

English hearts were broken late on however, as Marc Cucurella supplied a perfect ball for Mikel Oyarzabal to clinch Spain’s fourth European Championship title, the most of any nation in the competition’s history.

With Southgate‘s contract expiring later this year, speculation has swirled about his future in the job. The FA are reportedly keen to keep him on and offer the former Crystal Palace and Aston Villa defender a new contract.

The 53-year-old, who has taken England to successive Euros finals and a World Cup semi-final during his eight years in charge, says he is not ready to make a decision yet.

“I don’t think now is a good time to make a decision like that,” he told ITV. “I need to talk to the right people. It’s not for now.”

Former England striker Alan Shearer believes the defeat to Spain will be Southgate’s last game as national team manager.

“I suspect it will be Southgate’s last game,” Shearer told BBC One. “From where he took over and where they are now. There will be great disappointment at home. Yes, we could have played more attacking football but they have got to the final. But when you are here, you have got to get over the line.

“The reality is he got us to a final three years ago and got us to a final here, and hasn’t won. That will hurt him and maybe he will think it’s time for someone else.”
