Southampton are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer, but may have to pay more than they want to.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that managerless Southampton are keen on the Austrian centre-back, who has struggled to break into the Tottenham first team since arriving at the club in 2015.

The defender has had to make do with a substitute role behind the regular defensive pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, where he made just nine appearances for the club last season.

Southampton have been keen on bolstering their defence since the departure of Jose Fonte to West Ham back in January.

There has also been plenty of speculation surrounding the future of Virgil van Dijk, but 24-year-old Wimmer is being viewed as a defensive partner for the Dutchman, rather than a replacement.

The only problem for the Saints is that they are unwilling to meet the £20m asking price that has been set by Spurs, who are keen to keep him.
