A game that has huge implications at both the top and bottom of the league as high flying Liverpool face relegation-threatened Southampton at St. Marys on Friday night.
Here’s all you need to know about this weekend’s game…
While the table says that Southampton are embroiled in a relegation battle, their recent form suggests that they should be able to maintain their place in the Premier League for next season.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have picked up nine points from their last four outings, recently beating Spurs and coming within a whisker of getting a result against Manchester United.
However, a game against Liverpool will be one of the stiffest tests of the season, although they will know plenty about a good number of the opposition side, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana all swapping the South Coast club for a move to Anfield in recent years.
Jurgen Klopp’s men seem to be over their mini-blip, and having fallen off the top of the table, they have got back on track and have won five of their last six in all competitions including that late, if not slightly fortuitous win over Spurs last weekend.
A win at St. Marys would see Liverpool move back to the top of the league ahead of Man City, who don’t play in the Premier League this weekend due to their FA Cup semi-final against Brighton on Saturday.
Former Saints defender Virgil van Dijk has been an absolute rock for the Reds this season, with the Dutchman being a key reason by Liverpool have conceded just 19 goals in their 32 league games this season so far.
Southampton: Gunn, Valery, Bednarek, Yoshida, Bertrand, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Long.
Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mane.
