Solskjaer insists Anthony Martial can be as good as Cristiano Ronaldo

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that Anthony Martial has the talent to become as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.

Martial reminded Manchester United fans of exactly what he can do on his day on Saturday, providing an assist for Paul Pogba, as well as scoring a sensational solo goal in the lunchtime game against Fulham.

It was a goal that had similarities to a goal that Cristiano Ronaldo scored at the same ground, against the same opponents, and also in February – all the way back in 2007. Both players picked up the ball by the half-way line, scampered down the left flank, beating a few players along the way, before firing the ball across the goalkeeper and into the bottom right.

While current caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasn’t involved that day, he does remember the goal well.

“He does have similarities [to Ronaldo’s], of course” Solskjaer said in his post-match press conference.

“It was towards the end of the game and we played a very poor game and Cristiano scored it.”

Martial’s goal was his 11th of the season, matching the tally that he achieved last season, and with the winger having recently penned a new five-and-a-half-year deal to keep him at Old Trafford until 2024, Solskjaer said that the talented French forward has the potential to emulate Ronaldo’s stellar career.

“If he wants to be at Cristiano’s level, Anthony knows what he has to do,” Solskjaer added.

“It’s up to him. He has the talent.”

Manchester United’s next outing is tomorrows Champions League tie against PSG, and with Neymar already having been ruled out with a broken metatarsal, there are now doubts over the fitness of Edinson Cavani.
