Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that Manchester United attacker Anthony Martial can still improve and get himself more goals after he committed his future to the club for the next five-and-a-half years.
On what was probably the most boring transfer deadline days in history, the news of Anthony Martial’s contract extension at Manchester United was probably the biggest story of the day.
The forward had been strongly linked with a move away from United during the Jose Mourinho era, but with attacking football back on the menu at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Martial is back to being a regular within the Red Devils lineup.
While former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson described Martial’s new contract as the best deal of deadline day, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised the 23-year-old’s fantastic technical abilities with the ball at his feet.
“It’s confirmation we believe in him,” Solskjaer said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Leicester.
“He has had ups and downs but he now knows he is going to stay here.
“I believe in him. He is a fantastic finisher with great ability. I’ve not seen many players with the quick feet and skills he has. Hopefully he will grab the chance with both feet.”
Despite being clearly impressed with the Frenchman’s talents, Solskjaer said that he believed that Martial can get even better.
“He needs to make more runs in behind. As a striker, you need to read the game and sniff out chances. He needs to score more simple goals.”
