New Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has already set his sights on promotion to the Premier League.
The head coach took charge recently, after Steve Bruce was sacked by the Midland outfit.
Despite Villa’s slow start, Smith hopes he can turn things round and has already thrown the gauntlet down for his players to keep the dream alive.
“I said when I took over my target was to try and get promoted,” Smith told the press ahead of tonights game.
“I don’t think the fans would thank me if I said ‘hmm, sixth or seventh’.
“The target is to try and get promoted.
Smith earned a lot of plaudits for his work at Brentford, who are level on points with Villa so far this campaign.
The highly-rated coach started well with a victory over Swansea City, but was then defeated by Norwich in midweek.
However, Smith believes if the Villains can make their home ground a fortress, then there is hope for promotion back to the Premier League.
“It’s a very tight league and a lot of teams will beat each other over the season.
“If we can make Villa Park a bit of a fortress and go and be hard to beat on the road we’ll certainly be in and about it, that’s for sure.”
