Marco Silva was left massively impressed with Everton’s ‘spirit’ after watching his side beat Arsenal 1-0 at Goodison Park.
Silva’s Everton side totally dominated preceedings in the only Premier League game of the day, opening up Arsenal’s defence time after time, with the 1-0 scoreline really flattering the visitors.
The Toffees pressed quickly and aggressively, particularly in midfield, while young forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin had Arsenal‘s centre-back’s scared stiff all afternoon.
Speaking after the game, Marco Silva said that the Blues recent upturn in results, whch has also seen them beat Chelsea and West Ham, is down to an improved spirit and confidence.
“Really, really happy. We deserve the three points. The chances we created, we should score more goals. It is a fantastic win – one more clean sheet,” the Portuguese told BBC MOTD.
“That’s the spirit I like, the desire to win every challenge. (Earlier in the season) we lost some confidence, we had a break and after we worked really well. It’s the same team with more confidence.
“It is fantastic to be solid in this way.
The only goal of the game was scored by Everton defender Phil Jagielka, who was only playing after regular centre-back Michael Keane decided he couldn’t play due to illness. Speaking about the 36-year-old matchwinner, Silva hailed his professionalism.
“He was to start on the bench, but showed how he is a good professional and prepares himself for what the coach and team needs. He is always ready to help the team.
“He really deserved the goal.”
The win moves Everton to within a point of seventh-placed Leicester City.
