Shearer: Liverpool players ‘failed miserably’ against Wolves

Alan Shearer believes Liverpool’s players failed miserably in their FA Cup Third Round defeat to Wolves.

The Reds fell at the first hurdle of the famous old knock out competition, losing 2-1 to Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

Former Newcastle forward, turned pundit, Shearer was clearly left unimpressed by the players Liverpool turned to on the night.

‘Liverpool have a very big squad and when you rotate like Jurgen Klopp did you are gambling.’ Shearer told the BBC.

‘He is looking to guys who aren’t in the first team to give him a performance and they failed miserably.”

With the title race firmly on the minds of everyone at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp elected to rotate his side for their tough third round tie away at Wolves.

The likes of Mingolet, Origi, Sturridge, Moreno and Keita were given game time and a chance to impress, while youngsters Rafa Camacho and Curtis Jones were thrown into the mix.

Klopp will be concerned and disappointed that the fringe members of his squad looked disinterested and failed to take their chance to impress.

Shearer was correct in his assessment that these players failed miserably. They looked sloppy and generally quite timid as they handed the advantage to Wolves. While its obvious that Klopp is going after the title, he will be frustrated by such a toothless display.

The one shining light was that of 16-year-old defender Ki-Jana Hoever who was outstanding after coming on for the injured Dejan Lovren after five minutes.
