Shaqiri ‘proud’ to score first Liverpool goal in Cardiff victory

Xherdan Shaqiri scored his first Liverpool goal as the Reds beat Cardiff City 4-1 at Anfield.

The Swiss international came on for Adam Lallana on the hour mark and finished coolly after a nice assist from Mohamed Salah with five minutes of normal time left on the clock.

Shaqiri couldn’t hide his delight when speaking after the game:

“I was very pleased to score, I was waiting a few games for this,” he told BBC. “I am proud to score my first goal here in front of the fans and hope I can keep doing this.’’

Shaqiri said that Liverpool’s German manager Jurgen Klopp told him to stick to his his natural game before coming on as a substitute.

“The manager told me to go and enjoy the game, to help the team, to play my game. I try to do my best all the time, so today was good for me.

“We are a top team, to be successful we have to win these games. They are tough, not always nice to play. It is the beginning of the season, so we have to keep going like this, if we do we are going to have a successful year.”

Mo Salah and Sadio Mané were also on the scoresheet for the victory which puts Liverpool three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

The defending champions play their game-in-hand away to Spurs on Monday night.
