Maurizio Sarri has explained why he feels Jorginho’s role in the Chelsea side is so important after fans criticised the Brazilian’s repeated selection in the starting line-up.
The Blues started off slowly in their Europa League second leg tie with Malmo, eventually overcoming the Swedish outfit with three second-half goals from Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Afterwards Sarri emphasised the importance of Jorginho, who has struggled at times this season and has become something of a scapegoat amongst the Blues faithful – especially since N’Golo Kante has been moved out of position to accommodate the Italian international.
‘I think in the first 30 minutes we understood why Jorginho is very important,’ Sarri told his post-match press conference.
‘We were in trouble getting out of our half with the pressing and with Jorginho it’s easier. I hope our fans can understand he’s a very important player for us.’
Chelsea next face Manchester City in the League Cup final on Sunday afternoon in Wembley.
