Sarri: Higuain is the ‘right player’ for Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri has said that Gonzalo Higuain is the ‘right player’ for Chelsea as the striker edges closer to completing his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine is in England having a medical ahead of completing a loan move until the end of the season, with Chelsea retaining an option to extend it by a further 12 months.

He will replace Alvaro Morata who has struggled to find his form since making a £58 million move to the Premier League last summer, and Sarri has said that Higuain is ‘the right player’ for the club.

“He is a very strong striker, especially in my first season at Naples. He did very very well, for sure he is one of the best strikers in my career,” the Italian told the media ahead of Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham.

“He has played four seasons with Real Madrid, he is the right player to play here.”

The 31-year-old scored 36 goals in 35 Serie A appearances during his time working with Sarri at Napoli but has struggled for form this season, scoring just eight goals in 22 appearances while on loan at AC Milan, but Sarri is hopeful that he can help him rediscover his goalscoring touch.

“We believe he will sign the contract today. I hope that he will start scoring for us. I know he has had some difficulties at the moment, but we hope he can get back to his best form.”

Sarri also said that the imminent arrival of Higuain is a sign that the Chelsea hierarchy agrees with his view of the current squad and it’s deficiencies.

“I think the club agree with me about the team and it is difficult in January to find one of the most important strikers in the world. The club is working very well, it is not easy to have a very important striker.”
