Maurizio Sarri has said that Olivier Giroud is still a very important player for Chelsea despite the striker’s poor goalscoring form of late.
Giroud scored the only goal of the game in this evening’s Europa League clash in Belarus, where they beat BATE Borisov 1-0.
The header was in fact the first goal that the former Arsenal striker had scored in his last 794 minutes of football, and despite Alvaro Morata finally starting to make himself a worthy candidate to be Chelsea‘s first choice striker, Maurizio Sarri has said that Giroud still has a part to play.
“I’m pleased for him,” Sarri said in his post-match press conference.
“He’s a very important player for us, he’s very useful for the team but I know very well that strikers want to score, and so for his confidence, it’s very important. But I don’t want him to be worried about scoring because for us he’s very important.”
