Maurizio Sari has said that David Luiz is a better player than he first realised when he first arrived at the club while admitting the defender was confused at his exclusion under Antonio Conte.
The Brazilian became an integral part of the Chelsea defence in Antonio Conte’s three at the back system during his first season at the club but found himself ostracized last season by the Italian coach.
There was speculation that he may leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with doubts lingering over his ability to play in the preferred back four of Maurizio Sarri. He has however done extremely well so far, leaving the new man in charge to admit he is a better player than he first thought.

“Two seasons ago, he was a protagonist,” said Sarri. “Then six months ago, he was not playing, so he was a little confused.
“He’s direct. If he has to say something to the manager, he has to talk to me. I like very much direct people.
“When I arrived here, immediately I had the feeling he’s a very good player for my way of football because he’s a centre-back who is very technical.
“Then I appreciate his qualities as a man. He’s really better than I thought before.”
