Maurizio Sarri has given his backing to David Luiz, insisting he can have a ‘big future’ with the Blues.

Luiz was one of the players to suffer under Antonio Conte last season, making just 19 appearances in the Premier League as everything seemed to unravel in the Italian’s second season in charge.

However, Conte’s replacement Maurizio Sarri has said that the Brazilian has a ‘good chance’ to play under his stewardship:

“I don’t know about what happened in the past but now he has a good chance,” said Sarri. “We only have to carry on like we are doing now with him.”

The Brazilian impressed as part of Conte’s back three during his first season at the club, and despite concerns about his defensive ability, Sarri insists Luiz can adapt to his favoured four-man defence:

“I disagree that he can only play as one of three central defenders,” added the former Napoli coach.

“If you are a good defender, you can play in a line of three or in a four.

“David has a big future here. He will be useful for us but not just on the pitch. He is also very important in the dressing room. I very much enjoy his attitude when I am working with him.”
