Sarri: Chelsea deserved to beat Man City

Chelsea recovered from their recent wobble in the best possible fashion by beating Man City 2-0 tonight at Stamford Bridge.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the first-half, but the home side would go in at the break 1-0 up after N’Golo Kante smashed his sides first shot on target into the roof of the net on 45 minutes.

Chelsea grew in confidence during the second period and a 78th minute header from defender David Luiz sealed the win for Maurizio Sarri’s side and handed City their first top flight defeat of the season.

Speaking after the game Blues boss Sarri revealed that he felt his team were good value for their win and praised the contribution of star attacker Eden Hazard who was asked to play in an unfamiliar role as a central striker.

“I am very happy with the win because it is not very easy to win against Manchester City or Pep Guardiola. I am happy with the mentality of the team in this match.’’ Sarri told BT Sport.

“It is difficult for us to find motivation but when we are, we are a very strong team. Today we played with a very good level of application, determination and the right level of aggressiveness.

“My players have to continue like this. We had some problems in the first 30 minutes because Eden Hazard played like a striker for the first time and in the defensive movement we weren’t perfect.

“We started well in the second half and in the end we deserved to win. I think he [Hazard] had some problems only for the last 20 minutes. He played very well and deserved to score. I am really happy with his first match in this position.

“It is difficult to play in the defensive line when it is not working. It was working well today so it is easier for the centre-backs to play a good match.”

Chelsea move back into the top four after tonight’s win, whereas City drop to second, with Liverpool taking over top spot.
