Former Chelsea, Celtic and Blackburn striker Chris Sutton has backed England captain Harry Kane to outscore superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and finish as the World Cup’s top scorers this summer in Russia.
Sutton formed one of the Premier League’s greatest striker partnerships with former Three Lions skipper Alan Shearer, who finished the 1996 European Championship as the leading goal scoring, and the BT Sport pundits reckons both front men have similar characteristics.
“Harry Kane has the best chance of any England player since Alan Shearer of winning the Golden Boot at a major tournament.” he wrote in the Daily Mail.
“I played alongside Shearer — who was top scorer at Euro ’96 — and I see similarities between the two.
“Kane possesses the same ruthlessness that Shearer used to have. Take the Nigeria match. After being quiet for much of the first half, Kane took the first chance he had.
“It doesn’t matter whether it is a friendly, a Premier League game or a World Cup quarter-final — Kane has the hunger and belief to score any opportunity that comes his way.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he outscores Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in Russia.”
Kane already has a decent scoring record for his Country, netting 13 times in 24 appearances.
With England facing relative minnows in Panama and Tunisia in the Group stages it certainly isn’t inconceivable that the Spurs striker could score a couple of two’s or three’s as he so often does in the Premier League.
