Wayne Rooney has revealed he has a number of options from the Premier League and around the Premier League as he ponders his Manchester United future.
The Manchester United record goalscorer has had a much diminished influence at Old Trafford this season, including only starting on the bench in both Manchester United’s League Cup and Europa Leage final victories. He has even been omitted from Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.
This has left the 31-year-old considering his future at Manchester United, as well as a number of offers for his services.
Rooney said:
“There are lots of offers on the table, both in England and abroad, and that’s what I have to decide on,
“I’ve got some decisions to make now over the next few weeks so I will talk with my family and then I’ll decide. I think I have to make a decision in terms of a football decision, and that’s what I’ll do, I’ll do that the next few weeks with my family while I’m away and as soon as I know what’s going on I’m sure you will.”
This season, Rooney has made 39 appearances for United, but had scored just eight goals – the lowest ever of his Manchester United career and the same amount as in his breakthrough campaign at Everton back in 2002/3.
However, despite accepting a lesser role at United this season, he claims he still has the appetite to play.
“Listen, first of all I’ve always been a team player,
“This year, I’ve never once sulked or let my head drop. I’ve understood what was best for the team, I’ve tried to help when the manager’s played me.
“Of course I want to play. I want to be on the pitch, of course. A younger me would have been a lot more frustrated. I think I understand what’s right and what’s needed for the club, and I respect that. Obviously I’m happy to be part of that and in some way help the club win trophies, and that’s the way it’s been over the last year. That’s the decision I have to make now – whether I want to continue doing that or go on and play more regular football.”
Rooney claims he has “more or less” made his mind up on his future, revealing there are plenty of options on the table for his services. West Ham and Everton have both been linked with having an interest in Rooney, whilst a number of Chinese clubs want to take the United captain to the Far East.
Despite Jose Mourinho claiming that he is very happy for the United captain to stay at Old Trafford, Sky Sports are reporting that Rooney is likely to leave.
However Rooney has revealed that Everton are only Premier League club he would play for again.
“I’ve played for two Premier League clubs and they’re the only two Premier League clubs I’ll play for.”
Whether Rooney will move back to Goodison Park or leaves the Premier League is yet to be seen, but what is clear is that Rooney has a big decision to make.
