Cristian Romero is open to joining Arsenal this summer, but Tottenham have no intention of allowing their captain to make the controversial move across north London.
The 28-year-old Argentina international is expected to leave Tottenham before the transfer window closes, despite having three years remaining on his contract. Arsenal are among the clubs interested in the centre-back, alongside Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.
However, The Sun reports that Tottenham would not entertain the prospect of selling Romero to their fiercest rivals.
A move to Arsenal would evoke memories of Sol Campbell’s controversial switch between the clubs in 2001. Campbell joined Arsenal as a free agent after his Tottenham contract expired and remains the last player to move directly between the two clubs.

Romero’s contractual situation gives Tottenham greater control over his future, although the club are reportedly preparing for his departure. New head coach Roberto De Zerbi has already signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m as a potential replacement.
Atletico Madrid are considered a more likely destination and are reportedly preparing a fresh bid for Romero, whom they previously attempted to sign before he renewed his Tottenham contract.
Inter Milan also remain interested but have yet to reach an agreement with Romero over personal terms.
Arsenal’s interest comes with William Saliba facing a spell on the sidelines with a back injury. The Gunners had also explored a move for John Stones, but the Manchester City defender instead joined Inter on a two-year deal.
Despite Romero’s reported willingness to consider Arsenal, Tottenham’s stance appears to make a move between the north London rivals extremely unlikely.
