Liverpool’s development plan for Jeremy Jacquet was the driving factor behind the defender’s decision to snub Chelsea for Anfield.

Liverpool are closing in on the signing of the Rennes centre-back for a fee that could reach €70m including add-ons. The transfer will take place in the summer with Rennes reluctant to lose the 20-year-old in the January window.

Chelsea had been in negotiations with Rennes to sign Jacquet, but the player’s preference for Liverpool has ended interest from Stamford Bridge.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that both Premier League clubs offered ‘exactly’ the same financial terms to Jacquet, but Liverpool’s insistence that the Frenchman would ‘be a crucial player immediately’ persuaded the defender to move to Merseyside.

“Jeremy Jacquet accepted the exactly same terms from Liverpool that was offered by Chelsea. Liverpool didn’t offer extra money,” Romano revealed.

“They presented their long term project telling the player that he was going to be a crucial player immediately. So to be a big part of the Liverpool restyling in the defence.”

Jacquet is set to undergo a medical with Liverpool ahead of finalising his summer switch to England.
