Matt Ritchie insists Newcastle still have ‘to fight for every point’ if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

Rafael Benitez’s side currently sit in 14th ahead of their fixture with Everton at St James’ Park this weekend, six points clear of Cardiff City in the final relegation place.

Despite their advantage, Scotland international Ritchie insists his side must not lose focus with the ‘tight’ nature at the bottom of the Premier League seeing five teams separated by just six points.

“It is so tight,” Ritchie told the Mirror.

“The Premier League is so close you have to keep fighting until the end, like we did last season. Last day, we jumped up four or five places. Again this season, it is going to be so tight.

“We are probably in our best spell of form this season, for sure.

“We have to fight for every point.”
