Sheffield United defender Richard Stearman believes that the Blades’ strength in depth is the reason the side have been so successful so far this season.
Chris Wilder’s men sit top of the Championship currently with 29 points from their opening 15 games, and will want to continue their push for promotion after their emphatic start to the season.
Last season Sheffield also had a great start to the campaign before fading away, but Stearman believes that the club can continue to be successful because the squad has greater strength in depth compared to back then.
“From a playing point of view, I thought we did well last season, but we have more strength in depth now and can cope better with the rigours of Championship football. Hopefully that strength will come to fruition over the winter months,” he told sufc.co.uk.
“You need a good core of players to play the majority of games but where our strength might lie will be the ability to call on five, six or maybe more players who are Championship ready, being able to fill in when the regulars are sidelined, and helping us continue to pick up points.
The former Wolves defender believes that the Blades’ success to start the 2018-19 season is a sign of their ability as a squad and that they can kick on and stick around the top half of the table for the rest of the season.
“What we have done so far this season proves that last year was no fluke and now that we have a stronger squad we are hoping to hang around at the top longer this year,” he added.
Sheffiled United travel to Nottingham Forest on Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.
